GMC Service & Repair Mechanic
The General Motors Truck Company (GMC) is part of the oldest and most important automakers in US history, General Motors (GM). GMC started out as Rapid Motor Vehicle Company (RMVC) in 1901. RMVC designed the first commercial truck, so GM quickly purchased the company in 1909 and merged it with Reliance Motor Company in 1911, forming GMC. The GMC truck was first introduced in 1912 at the New York International Auto Show and started selling commercial trucks at a rapid rate.
The very popular Suburban was amazingly introduced in 1937, and by the 1940s, GMC produced over 600,000 trucks for the US military to help with the war effort. However, it wasn’t until the 1960s when GMC began manufacturing vehicles for personal use, which is when we first see the Sierra. The 1970s brought us a bigger portfolio of trucks and SUVs, by offering higher specification Chevrolet (also owned by GM) vehicles, such as larger engine options. GMC sales really picked up with the introduction of compact trucks, like the S-15, in the 1980s.
GMC primarily designs and manufactures trucks, vans, buses, military vehicles, and SUVs. It’s tagline, “We are Professional Grade” is longest lasting tagline at GM.
As previously mentioned, in the 1970s, GMC began offering the same vehicles as Chevrolet but at much higher specs and prices. For example, the GMC Sprint was nearly identical to the Chevrolet El-Camino. In 1996, GM merged its GMC and Pontiac units, making the new unit the premium producer of Chevrolet-platform trucks, vans and SUVs. These new ultra-premium Chevrolet-platform vehicles were marketed under the Denali line, which continues until today.
