What is a head gasket, and what does it do? The head gasket provides a tight seal between the engine cylinders and the engine block itself. This provides optimal compression of the cylinders to fire correctly. It also keeps unwanted objects out of the cylinders. Head gaskets are put under enormous pressure and heat, which means that they can fail.
