Japanese Automakers in the United States
Japanese auto repair was never as important as it is today. When Japanese vehicles first entered the US market in the 1950s, they were much lighter and had better fuel economy than domestic (American) cars. Gas was cheap and Americans loved their gas guzzlers. However, it wasn’t until the Energy Crisis of 1979 that Americans became “energy-efficient conscious.” During that time, the price of gas doubled and sent Americans into a panic. Long lines at gas stations were the norm, and the government began putting controls on domestic gas prices. The auto industry has never been the same since.
Shorty after the Energy Crisis of 1979, the Japanese automakers flourished in the United States and built a loyal following. For the first time ever, Toyota, Nissan, and Honda began surpassing the sales of their American and European counterparts. Suddenly, having Japanese auto repair shops became extremely important. With such an amazing success, the Japanese automakers had a positive impact on the auto industry. The US market became so important for the Japanese automakers that they began opening up manufacturing plants to keep up with demand. But opening up plants did something more important. The Japanese brands became household names and employed thousands of Americans. They were cementing themselves in American culture and began designing pickup trucks and other models specifically for the American market.
Japanese Auto Repair
Today, the Japanese automakers are rooted in their history but have also ventured out into designing vehicles like their American and European counterparts. For example, Toyota has Lexus, which clearly goes after the German automakers’ target market. Nissan and Honda have Infiniti and Acura, which are both automakers’ luxury brands.
